چکیده

Climate oscillations that change local environmental conditions often cause species distributions to shift, expand or contract along latitudinal or elevational gradients (Hewitt, 2001, 2004). Whenever species track fluctuating environmental conditions, populations may experience alternating periods of either isolation or connectivity (Hewitt, 1996; Wiens, 2004; Museum of Southwestern Biology and Department of Biology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131, USA, Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Ecology, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM 88003, USA, Frey Biological Research, PO Box 294 Radium Springs, NM 88054, USA

Discordant patterns of evolutionary differentiation in two Neotropical treefrogs.

Comparative studies of codistributed taxa test the degree to which historical processes have shaped contemporary population structure. Discordant patterns of lineage divergence among taxa indicate that species differ in their response to common historical processes. The complex geologic landscape of the Isthmus of Central America provides an ideal setting to test the effects of vicariance and o...

Deep global evolutionary radiation in birds: diversification and trait evolution in the cosmopolitan bird family Rallidae.

Sufficient breadth of taxon sampling in major organisms groups is important to identify more realistic biological diversification processes that reveal the degree of historical biogeographic signal and net diversification retained in the current lineage distribution. We examine the mechanisms driving diversity in one of the major avian clades with an exceptional large-scale radiation, the famil...

Island phytophagy: explaining the remarkable diversity of plant-feeding insects.

Plant-feeding insects have undergone unparalleled diversification among different plant taxa, yet explanations for variation in their diversity lack a quantitative, predictive framework. Island biogeographic theory has been applied to spatially discrete habitats but not to habitats, such as host plants, separated by genetic distance. We show that relationships between the diversity of gall-indu...

Mass extinction, gradual cooling, or rapid radiation? Reconstructing the spatiotemporal evolution of the ancient angiosperm genus Hedyosmum (Chloranthaceae) using empirical and simulated approaches.

Chloranthaceae is a small family of flowering plants (65 species) with an extensive fossil record extending back to the Early Cretaceous. Within Chloranthaceae, Hedyosmum is remarkable because of its disjunct distribution--1 species in the Paleotropics and 44 confined to the Neotropics--and a long "temporal gap" between its stem age (Early Cretaceous) and the beginning of the extant radiation (...

Did true frogs 'dispersify'?

The interplay between range expansion and concomitant diversification is of fundamental interest to evolutionary biologists, particularly when linked to intercontinental dispersal and/or large scale extinctions. The evolutionary history of true frogs has been characterized by circumglobal range expansion. As a lineage that survived the Eocene-Oligocene extinction event (EOEE), the group provide...
